The first steps with Les Pas-Sages aims to strengthen youth work practice across Europe by equipping youth workers with the competences, tools, and confidence to address one of the most pressing structural barriers affecting young people today: housing insecurity. Across Europe, youth workers increasingly encounter young people who struggle with rising housing costs, delayed independence, social isolation, and reduced participation in democratic life. Housing precarity affects wellbeing, access to education and employment, and the ability to engage as active citizens. Yet youth workers often lack practical frameworks and pedagogical tools to address these systemic issues in their daily practice. This project responds to that gap. Overall objective: To strengthen the capacity of youth workers to support young people—particularly those with fewer opportunities—in understanding, designing, and initiating cooperative, inclusive, and community-led housing and living models through non-formal education. By doing so, the project reinforces youth work as a space for active citizenship, social innovation, democratic participation, and long-term resilience. The specific objectives of the project are: Strengthen facilitation and democratic competences Equip youth workers with practical skills in participatory governance, collective decision-making, and inclusive facilitation to foster active citizenship in youth initiatives. Address housing precarity through systemic approaches Provide youth workers with knowledge of cooperative, non-speculative, and community-led housing models so they can guide young people in exploring sustainable alternatives. Promote inclusion and equal opportunities - Enhance youth workers’ capacity to support marginalised young people by creating accessible, solidarity-based, and diversity-sensitive learning environments. - Foster resilience and wellbeing - Develop youth workers’ ability to build safe group dynamics, relational trust, and long-term community thinking that supports young people’s stability and mental health. - Ensure transfer into daily youth work practice - Enable youth workers to apply tools and methods locally through tested facilitation practices, follow-up actions, and a shared digital toolkit.
