This project was developed based on the interests of young people who have recognized drug and alcohol use as problematic behavior within their own environments and peer groups. Some participants have already been offered marijuana despite being minors, which highlights the ease of access to drugs for youth. As young people, they are well aware that resisting peer pressure is often difficult, as choosing not to use drugs or alcohol can sometimes result in being perceived as "not cool." Consequently, the youth themselves decided to create and implement this project. Furthermore, this project addresses the fundamental needs of the partner organizations—schools, as educational institutions—to protect young people from the threats posed by substance abuse. Participants highlighted drug addiction as the most serious form of dependency, a fact corroborated by the 2024 European Drug Report. According to the report, the overdose mortality rate in the EU in 2022 was estimated at 22.5 deaths per million inhabitants aged 15–64. Drug addiction leaves devastating consequences on the individual (often with fatal outcomes) and their loved ones. Participants identified alcoholism as the second major issue, supported by Eurostat data. In 2019, 8.4% of the EU population aged 15 and older reported consuming alcohol daily, compared to 28.8% weekly and 22.8% monthly consumers. Furthermore, it is estimated that approximately 5.4% of the adult population in the EU—over 20 million people—live with clinical alcohol dependence. Project Mission: To empower young people to avoid risky behaviors and strengthen their ability to support friends and relatives in making smart life choices. Project Objectives: 1. Education on various forms of addiction. 2. Developing skills for making correct and informed decisions. 3. Familiarization with social support measures—methods for the reintegration of addicts into society and community harm reduction. This project addresses the following fundamental needs of young people: - Understanding the risks and harms caused to youth by drugs and alcohol. - Acquiring skills to make correct life decisions, including finding safer and more beneficial ways to seek entertainment and popularity (as alternatives to drug and alcohol use). - Increasing the capacity of schools to protect youth from substance abuse.
