Objectives

The project “Words and Hands to Support, Not to Harm” is based on a youth exchange involving young people from Croatia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, including young people with fewer opportunities such as those from alternative care, young people with intellectual and physical disabilities, young people from families with lower socio-economic status, and young volunteers who are active in their communities. During the exchange, young people will participate in various workshops related to violence in intimate relationships, peer violence, and violence on social media, as well as workshops on financial literacy and employment aimed at achieving financial independence, and mental health workshops where they will learn how to cope with stress and negative emotions and how to seek necessary and timely support. Through this project, we aim to educate and empower young people so that they can recognize toxic intimate relationships and violent behavioral patterns in relationships, as well as recognize peer violence and end such relationships in time, stand up for themselves if they are victims of violence, or help someone who is a victim. We especially want to empower young people with fewer opportunities, who are often victims of violence and who lack concrete knowledge on how to protect themselves and leave violent relationships. One of the common reasons why young people remain in violent relationships is financial dependence on their partner, which is the result of financial illiteracy and a lack of knowledge on how to properly prepare for job searching. Therefore, this project will also focus on educating young people about finances; they will learn how to manage money and make sound financial decisions. To help them find employment and move closer to financial independence, young people will be educated on how to effectively present themselves to potential employers through a Europass CV and during job interviews. Violence is not only physically present in communities; it is also highly present on social media (cyberbullying). Therefore, this project will also focus on educating young people about recognizing violence on social media and about the safe use of social media. In the workshops, young people will learn how to identify violence on social media and how to respond appropriately if they themselves are victims of violence or know someone who is a victim. Special attention will also be given to empowering young people, building self-esteem and self-confidence, and working on their mental health. Young people will learn how to cope with stress and negative emotions, how to stand up for themselves, and where they can seek help if they need it. Through the workshops, we will provide young people with concrete tools that they can apply immediately to feel better and to protect their mental health. The goal of the project is also to enable young people to connect, make friends, share experiences, develop empathy for one another, and develop their social, communication, and presentation skills, as well as organizational and workshop facilitation skills, digital skills, and creativity. The importance of developing empathy toward persons with disabilities and encouraging inclusive behavior among young people is one of the key messages we want to send to society through this project, and the young people participating in the project will be the main promoters of such behavior.
