Objectives

The aim of the “Your Voice, Your EUrope” project is to strengthen attitudes linked to active citizenship, the practice of democratic participation, and awareness of how the European Union works among young people with fewer opportunities. We deliver this through a traveller, non-formal learning process that uses experiential methods to support participants in developing skills, deepening self-awareness and becoming more conscious of their own role. The programme particularly targets young people who already take on responsibilities in their communities, are interested in public affairs, and are committed to youth participation initiatives, for them, we create opportunities to experience participation and democracy in real-life contexts across different European countries. Through their own lived experiences, participants gain a deeper understanding of the role of European institutions and of the rights, opportunities, and responsibilities they have as citizens within EU democratic processes. During the project, young people gain first-hand insight into the EU’s decision-making mechanisms, the principles of democratic governance, and the roles of key institutions. They also learn how they can connect to EU-related issues as active citizens, for example through youth consultations, participatory forums, and channels of civil society and youth organisations, as well as by taking part in elections. We place special emphasis on ensuring that young people with fewer opportunities clearly see that youth also have a role and influence in shaping Europe’s future, whether through advocacy communities, local or European participatory spaces, or through informed civic choices. During the visits, participants engage directly with several actors and sites of the EU institutional system (such as the European Parliament, the European Commission, and the European Council), making the relevance of these institutions and their operating logic tangible. We consciously aim for EU-related knowledge not to remain abstract information, but to become personally meaningful for young people: they recognise how decisions taken at EU level shape their everyday opportunities, rights, and future prospects. The programme specifically supports young people for whom gaining international experience is typically less accessible. The travel component offers them a safe, guided setting to experience mobility and discover new perspectives, while receiving continuous support from their group and an experienced leader. Intercultural encounters and experiential, non-formal methods also help them become more independent, strengthen their self-confidence, and develop their ability to cooperate with others. Throughout the project, participants develop several key competences, such as communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and cooperation, through interactive, playful, and participation-based learning situations. We use non-formal learning methods before the trip (preparatory and planning sessions), during the trip (on-site processing and reflection blocks), and after the trip as well (follow-up activities and experience-sharing). The programme goes beyond knowledge acquisition: young people also reflect on their learning process based on their own experiences. Through daily and final evaluations, they structure what new knowledge, skills, and insights they have gained, and they articulate how they can apply these in their own communities. In this way, the experience becomes a consciously recognised learning outcome. Finally, it is important to emphasise that the project’s goal is not simply for young people to visit EU institutions, but for them to return home as active, informed, and responsible citizens. Using the tools of non-formal learning, we ensure that the knowledge and experiences gained during the trip are integrated into their thinking and have a longer-term impact on their decisions. The programme promotes social participation, significantly boosts self-confidence, strengthens European identity, and provides young people with concrete tools to become active actors in democratic processes.
