The core aim of this project is to support young people with fewer opportunities to develop independence, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging locally, nationally, and within Europe through a supported, non-formal learning mobility experience. At a time when young people are increasingly engaging with the world and with one another through screens, they paradoxically report feeling more disconnected, isolated, and unheard. In Dublin, over 20% of 30-year-olds continue to live at home, and the average age of leaving the family home has risen to 28. This trend decreases the opportunities for our young people to learn the vital life skills of independence and self-reliance while connecting with their community and the EU. For young people from disadvantaged communities and DEIS school backgrounds, these barriers are even more pronounced. DiscoverEU Inclusion provides a rare and timely opportunity to address this gap through real-world, experiential learning. The primary objective of the project is to use youth work methodologies to enable young people to experience independence in a safe, supported way. Through travel, decision-making, and shared responsibility, participants learn by doing, developing practical life skills, resilience, and self-awareness. As youth workers our role is not to direct the experience, but to facilitate learning, support reflection and create the conditions in which young people can take ownership of their journey. A key objective is to strengthen young people’s confidence and self-belief at a critical stage of transition from youth to adulthood. By planning routes, managing budgets, navigating unfamiliar environments, and responding to challenges, participants experience both success and setbacks. These moments are intentionally used as learning opportunities, helping young people understand how they respond under pressure, identify their strengths, and recognise areas for growth. The project also aims to foster active citizenship and European identity. By travelling across Europe and engaging directly with different cultures, participants move beyond abstract ideas of the EU and experience European citizenship first-hand. This supports youth work goals around participation, inclusion, and democratic engagement, particularly for young people who may feel excluded from wider social and political structures. Another central objective is to ensure that young people are meaningfully involved in all stages of the project. From a youth work perspective, participation is not symbolic it is practical and embedded. BYS supports young people to design their travel plans, make collective decisions, and influence the direction of the project. Their voices are valued, their choices respected, and their peer influence recognised as a positive force within the community. Ultimately, what we aim to achieve is long-term impact rather than a one-off experience. Through Discover EU Inclusion, young people gain skills, confidence, and perspectives that continue to shape their choices, relationships, and engagement long after the journey ends. The project strengthens their connection to BYS, supports progression into leadership and peer roles, and reinforces a sense of safety and possibility for both participants and their families core outcomes of effective, values-led youth work practice.
