The project Barkeno aims to promote social inclusion, personal development and European participation among young people with fewer opportunities from disadvantaged peripheral areas of Palermo. From a youth work perspective, the project seeks to create a safe and supportive international mobility experience that allows participants to develop key competences such as autonomy, self-confidence, teamwork, intercultural awareness and a sense of European belonging. Many of the participants have never travelled abroad and face social, economic and educational obstacles that limit their access to international opportunities. Through a structured educational pathway based on non-formal learning, the project will combine preparation activities, a group travel experience by train to Barcelona, cultural exploration and participation in the Primavera Sound context, as well as follow-up and local dissemination. Music and cultural participation will be used as tools to engage the young people and connect the experience to their interests and daily realities. The main objectives of the project are to: enable young people with fewer opportunities to access a DiscoverEU mobility experience on an equal footing with their peers; strengthen their personal, social and intercultural competences through supported group travel; increase their awareness of European values and opportunities; empower them to become active participants in youth activities and future mobility projects. Overall, the project aims to use mobility as a tool for inclusion, learning and empowerment, strengthening both the participants and the youth work practices of the organisation.
