The project is rooted in the everyday youth work practice of the coordinating organisation and its partners, and in the direct experience gained through educational work with young people with fewer opportunities, in particular young people with mild intellectual disabilities. By implementing this project, we aim to reduce cultural, social and practical barriers that limit these young people’s participation in European mobility experiences, making DiscoverEU genuinely accessible and meaningful. From a youth work perspective, the project uses travel as a non-formal learning context in which young people can test themselves in real-life situations involving autonomy, responsibility and decision-making. Travelling, planning daily activities, moving around in an unfamiliar city, living together with others and dealing with small unexpected situations all become concrete opportunities to develop self-determination, self-confidence and transversal life skills. The main objective of the project is to promote greater responsible autonomy and self-determination, supporting real social inclusion. More specifically, the project aims to: - strengthen young people’s autonomy in everyday life (time management, mobility, budget management and daily organisation); - develop a conscious use of digital tools as support instruments (maps, mobility apps, electronic payments, daily planning tools); - improve communication and relational skills, fostering the ability to express needs, wishes and preferences and to interact in new and intercultural contexts; - support young people’s capacity to make personal choices and take responsibility, with appropriate educational support that is not substitutive; - encourage the expansion of social relationships beyond the family and usual environments; - strengthen a sense of European belonging through direct mobility experiences. The project places particular emphasis on the idea that autonomy does not mean the absence of support, but rather a gradual and supported process, built through guided experiences, practical tools and individual educational accompaniment (1:1 support). This approach allows young people to develop new skills without pressure, while respecting individual rhythms and needs. The DiscoverEU mobility experience is not considered an isolated event, but part of a broader educational pathway, integrated into the regular activities of the centres and the local network. The competences developed during the travel experience are recognised, reflected upon and transferred into everyday life contexts, contributing to an improved quality of life and to greater active participation in the community. Through this project, the organisation aims to demonstrate that young people with fewer opportunities can be active protagonists of high-quality European experiences, capable of generating personal growth, real inclusion and greater awareness of their value as active citizens.
