Objectives

The project stems from the need to offer four young women aged between 18 and 21, hosted in the residential facilities of the social cooperative Il Tetto – Casal Fattoria, a concrete opportunity to engage with new situations within a protected environment. The participants are going through the transition to adulthood without the support of a stable family network and with personal life paths that have limited their opportunities to develop autonomy, orientation skills and organisational abilities in unfamiliar contexts. For this reason, the project proposes an educational experience based on learning by doing, through gradual and accessible tasks. The main objective is to foster the development of transversal competences – autonomy, decision-making, cooperation and adaptability – in a way that is proportionate to the participants’ needs. Each phase of the project, from preparation to return, is structured as an educational opportunity: taking part in decision-making, managing small uncertainties, organising parts of the journey and finding one’s way in new environments. The preparation phase will be participatory, promoting an active role for the young women in defining the travel stages, accommodation and activities, thereby fostering awareness and realism in planning. The journey will last sixteen days and will take place entirely by train, with stops selected to ensure accessibility, urban readability and appropriate cultural stimulation. The planned activities will be simple yet meaningful, designed to strengthen autonomy and orientation skills. By way of example, some activities may include: (1) Vienna – An orderly and welcoming city, ideal as a first approach to Europe. Activities: walk through the MuseumsQuartier and Naschmarkt, observation of public spaces, visit to the Kunsthaus; orientation exercise using maps and public transport. (2) Prague – A compact and easily walkable city, suitable for first autonomous movements. Activities: photographic route between Charles Bridge and Malá Strana; visit to Letná Park; shared choice of a lunch venue using apps and maps; meeting with a former volunteer of Il Tetto. (3) Berlin – A young and multicultural metropolis that encourages openness and reduces the feeling of being observed. Activities: cycling tours to explore sustainable mobility; exploration of Neukölln and the Turkish market; visit to the Berlin Wall Memorial; meeting with a former ESC volunteer. (4) Amsterdam – A lively but not overwhelming city, with an easy-to-understand mobility system. Activities: cycling through the Jordaan and De Pijp neighbourhoods; visit to an accessible museum; use of free ferries to observe mobility systems; meeting with a former educator from Il Tetto now living there. (5) Paris – A major capital city offering many everyday spaces suitable for group experiences. Activities: visit to Montmartre and the Belleville market; orientation exercises using maps; observation of social dynamics in parks; meeting with friends connected to Il Tetto. (6) Lyon – A compact and calm city, well suited to the concluding phase of the journey. Activities: route through the Presqu’île and Vieux Lyon; visit to the Croix-Rousse murals; meeting with the daughter of one of our volunteers and her family; final reflection activity (“one image, one meaningful moment”). The activities have been designed starting from the participants’ educational needs. Managing uncertainty will be addressed through small autonomous explorations; limited organisational autonomy through shared daily planning; relational fragilities through meetings with reference persons already known to the cooperative. Each proposal thus becomes a tailored educational response that supports a realistic and gradual progression towards autonomy. Throughout the journey, two educators and one tutor will accompany the young women, ensuring a balance between support and autonomy. They will supervise more challenging moments while leaving space for the participants to make decisions and manage practical tasks. The experience also aims to broaden cultural and personal horizons by showing different lifestyles and enabling the participants to imagine new possibilities for their future. Upon return, a guided reflection process through photos, notes and a small final exhibition will help consolidate learning and make the progress achieved visible. The experience will thus be integrated into the cooperative’s ongoing educational pathways, contributing to strengthening the participants’ autonomy, self-confidence and planning skills.
