Objectives

WAYMAKERS aims to create a meaningful, inclusive and transformative non-formal learning space where young people can reconnect with nature, with themselves and with each other while developing agency in relation to environmental challenges. The project responds to concrete needs observed by partner organisations in their daily youth work: young people experiencing eco-anxiety, emotional overload and disconnection from nature and from their own sense of impact, alongside a strong desire to act but limited confidence, tools or supportive spaces to do so. WAYMAKERS addresses these needs by using nature-based learning, creative expression and participatory methods as core youth work tools rather than as add-ons. The main objectives of the project from a youth work practice perspective are to: - create a safe(r), inclusive and supportive learning environment where young people can slow down, reflect and engage with environmental topics without pressure or judgement; - strengthen young people’s relationship with nature through direct, embodied and experiential learning, fostering eco-awareness, care and responsibility; - support emotional wellbeing and resilience by offering space to process eco-emotions, reconnect with the body and reduce digital overload; - empower young people as active participants and co-creators by involving them in leading activities, shaping the programme and taking shared responsibility; - develop creative and expressive competences using eco-art, artivism and non-verbal methods as accessible youth work tools; - strengthen intercultural dialogue and peer learning by bringing together diverse young people to share local realities, perspectives and practices; - support learning transfer and local impact by enabling young people to translate reflection and imagination into concrete follow-up actions in their communities. Through these objectives, WAYMAKERS seeks to strengthen youth participation, agency and confidence while modelling youth work practices that are participatory, reflective, creative and grounded in real-life experience. The project aims not only to raise awareness about environmental issues but to support young people in seeing themselves as capable “waymakers” who can shape pathways toward more sustainable and regenerative futures within their own local contexts.
