Poetry in Motion is created in response to challenges identified in our organizations’ youth work practice and needs research: many young people experience social isolation, low confidence to express themselves in group or public settings, weak connection to their local communities, and limited opportunities to actively participate in social and civic life. Traditional educational environments often do not provide enough space for self-expression, emotional awareness, or initiative-taking, which results in young people feeling unheard, passive, or disconnected. At the same time, our research shows that creative, inclusive and non-formal approaches significantly increase young people’s motivation to engage and contribute, especially when they feel safe, valued and included. From a youth work perspective, the project aims to address these needs by creating a participatory, non-formal learning environment where young people can explore their voices, develop confidence and experience themselves as active contributors to group and community life. Poetry in Motion uses creative expression, embodiment and peer learning as youth work tools to support personal development, inclusion and active participation, in line with the objectives of Youth Exchanges to empower young people, foster intercultural learning and stimulate engagement in society. To achieve this, the project has defined the following objectives: O1: Empower 26 young people and 5 young leaders with creative and participatory tools and competences that strengthen their confidence to express themselves and actively participate in social and community life. O2: Enhance young people’s self-awareness and sense of agency by exploring personal stories, emotions, values and perspectives as a basis for meaningful engagement with others and society. O3: Build an inclusive international learning environment where diverse voices are valued, and where young people develop inclusive attitudes and practices they can apply in their local communities. O4: Develop young people’s soft skills such as communication, cooperation, leadership, creativity, empathy, cultural awareness and adaptability, increasing their confidence to participate actively in group and community initiatives. O5: Co-create a public community event with a performance that uses poetry, movement and creativity as tools for collective expression and dialogue. O6: Raise awareness and interest in EU opportunities for young people to increase participation and engagement. These objectives are achieved through non-formal and informal learning methods based on learning by doing, co-creation, reflection and peer learning. Participants are actively involved as co-creators of the programme and community actions. From a youth work perspective, Poetry in Motion contributes to strengthening inclusive, participatory and creative youth work practices by offering concrete methods that support self-expression, emotional awareness and active participation. The project responds to European and local youth work priorities by promoting inclusion, mental wellbeing, intercultural learning and civic engagement, while equipping young people and youth organisations with approaches that can be applied in local communities and future initiatives beyond the project.
