Quality and innovation of youth workNew learning and teaching methods and approaches

Objectives

The idea for this project emerged from conversations between several youth workers who use creative writing methods in their work and are interested in learning from others about how they implement creative writing activities, with which target groups, and through which methods. Children born after 2010 are the first generation to grow up with digital technologies present in their daily lives from birth. Research shows that excessive screen time is linked to depression, anxiety, and poorer emotional well-being, as well as increased social isolation. At the same time, young people spend less time in nature, which negatively affects stress levels, emotional self-regulation, and overall well-being. Youth workers involved in the project want to improve their approaches and methods in order to address mental health challenges and social isolation linked to excessive screen time. The project combines creative writing activities with time spent in nature. Participants will take part in creative writing and storytelling sessions where they will learn new methods and discuss how to apply them in youth work. These sessions will be combined with a hike of more than 100 km, during which participants will experience different nature-based activities that go beyond traditional outdoor programmes. The project is based on the idea that future education will require strong critical thinking, creativity, social and emotional skills, and self-directed learning. Long-distance hiking and creative writing methods are effective tools for developing these competencies. Creative writing are especially suitable for working with Generation Z and Generation Alpha, as it matches their communication styles and learning needs. The main objective of the project is to provide youth workers from the participating organisations with the opportunity to learn new creative writing methods and deepen their understanding of how to use them with different target groups and in various youth work contexts. The project has two additional objectives: to strengthen the participating organisations’ youth workers’ understanding of the positive impact of nature-based activities on young people’s mental health and to promote the acquisition of new nature- and place-based methods for practical youth work, as well as to strengthen the mental health of youth workers from the participating organisations and reduce the risk of burnout by providing a framework for healthier daily habits and group support in overcoming professional challenges. The project responds to the participating organisations’ need to improve their pedagogical approaches and non-formal education methods in order to address challenges faced by young people related to the impact of digital technologies. The organisations are also interested in exchanging experiences to enrich their activities and methods. For some organisations, a key need is also to strengthen the mental and physical well-being, as well as the creativity, of their youth workers, as burnout is a current issue. The project involves both experienced organisations and organisations with minimal experience in the Erasmus programme. For the less experienced organisations, the project will provide an opportunity to expand their international cooperation networks and gain experience, enabling them to use the programme’s opportunities more effectively in the future to address the needs of their target groups.
