Care Flows was created by a group of 8 young people from the Netherlands in online correspondence with peers in Romania and North Macedonia. Eastpackers is facilitating their application and will support them throughout the process. Care Flows is a Youth Exchange for 18-30 year olds, which will take place in the Danube delta in Romania. Care Flows brings youth from three different countries together to learn from and with each other using creative methods, with the vulnerable Danube Delta as a case study representing larger climate change issues. Water is the theme and starting point, bringing together different local problems (Dutch long history of water management, Macedonian water pollution, active role of water in Romanian rural lifestyle and ecotourism development). Because all participants, irrespective of their diverse backgrounds, have a direct relationship with water, we use water as a starting point for our discussions and working methods. We believe that a concrete, tangible resource such as water, is a more powerful starter for climate awareness and action than less visible elements of the dialogue such as CO2 or nitrogen. All participants are concerned about climate change, but climate engagement and activism take different forms across their geographic and cultural areas. For the Dutch participants, climate engagement is an explicit part of their everyday routine and, for some, even of their study field. In North Macedonia climate change is still a very new and niche topic associated with younger people, whereas in rural Romania climate change is felt and dealt with not in a theoretical, political or academic way, but on a highly practical local level through concerns about local environmental issues and agriculture. Care Flows stimulates exchange between these groups of young people to increase their climate awareness and offer them perspectives on different shapes that climate action and environmental protection can take across different regions. Through peer learning with professional facilitation, participants will develop competencies such as collaboration, (self-)presentation, nonverbal communication, critical thinking, cultural awareness and (visual) literacy. This increases their opportunities in education and work and encourages them to carry their climate awareness forward into their professional lives (for instance in (eco)tourism which is a big employer in their regions). Care Flows contributes to European solidarity by highlighting international interdependency when it comes to contemporary problems, particularly climate change. Rivers and the water cycle remind us that our problems are global and that we depend on each other to bring about change.
