The project Between Sea and Self (BSS) aims to strengthen the quality and confidence of youth work responses to young people’s mental wellbeing needs, especially anxiety, stress and emotional overload. The training is based on the shared needs and challenges that youth workers face in various parts of the world - youth workers increasingly find themselves supporting young people under pressure, yet many lack practical tools, ethical clarity and confidence when addressing mental health topics in non-clinical settings. Therefore the main aim of the training is to strengthen youth workers’ competences to support young people’s mental wellbeing and anxiety through non-formal, outdoor and blue-space-based methodologies, with reflection as a core professional skill rather than an optional add-on. With the following objectives the training will enable participants to: ● Increase understanding of youth mental health, anxiety and neurodivergent needs from youth work perspective. ● Explore the impact of nature and blue spaces on emotional wellbeing and stress reduction. ● Learn and practice safe, inclusive outdoor and blue-space activities for youth work settings. ● Design adaptable activity plans that can be implemented in their local contexts. ● Develop concrete skills for facilitating reflection before, during and after activities using verbal, creative and sensory methods. This project is inspired by good practices and key learning points from the Generation (Change?)’s previous training “Step into the Wilderness” implemented in Malta in 2025. While that training initially placed a strong emphasis on mental health from a medical perspective, including concepts such as wilderness therapy both trainers and participants later agreed that youth workers benefit most from practical, non-formal outdoor tools and clear guidance on how to process experiences reflectively without crossing a line with therapeutic role.
