The Lowlands Listening Project is a seven-day youth worker mobility (comprising five intensive working days and two travel days) taking place in Ghent, Belgium in August 2026. The project is organised by DebatUnie BV from the Netherlands as applicant organisation, in partnership with Debatunie ZVW from Belgium as host organisation. This mobility brings together 40 youth workers and volunteers who are actively engaged in debate education, civic education, and youth participation programmes across the Dutch-speaking Low Countries. From a youth work practice perspective, this project pursues five interconnected objectives. First, the project aims to strengthen cross-border dialogue and collaborative learning by enabling Dutch and Belgian youth workers to exchange best practices in debate-based civic education, building mutual understanding of cultural differences in youth work approaches while identifying common pedagogical goals. Second, the project seeks to develop inclusive facilitation skills by training highly-educated volunteer facilitators to adapt their debate methods for diverse audiences, with particular emphasis on reaching youth from vocational educational backgrounds and young people with disabilities. Third, the project will enhance digital pedagogy competencies through hands-on video production and editing workshops, equipping participants with modern teaching tools that can lower barriers to participation for diverse youth groups. Fourth, the project promotes democratic engagement through practice by immersing participants in a mock debate tournament and train-the-trainer workshops where they embody the democratic values of structured dialogue, respectful disagreement, and evidence-based argumentation that Erasmus+ champions. Fifth, the project ensures sustainability and lasting impact by establishing a post-exchange mentoring network with three online follow-up sessions over six months, enabling participants to support one another in implementing newly acquired methods within their home organisations. These objectives respond directly to identified gaps in cross-border exchange within the Dutch-speaking debate education community and the need for more inclusive, practically-oriented methods that can reach youth beyond traditional academic settings. By achieving these objectives, the project will strengthen the capacity of youth workers to facilitate meaningful civic engagement among young people who often feel excluded from democratic processes.
