Objectives

Through this project, we aim to provide young people with fewer opportunities from Workum and the surrounding region with a safe and structured first experience of European mobility. The project includes two 10-day DiscoverEU train journeys in December 2026 and April 2027, each involving five participants and two accompanying persons. From a youth work perspective, our main objective is to reduce barriers to international mobility and strengthen young people’s confidence, independence and sense of belonging. Many of the participants we aim to involve have limited financial means, low travel experience or reduced self-confidence, which prevents them from accessing European opportunities independently. By organising group-based mobility with reinforced mentoring, we create an accessible entry point into Europe. The project seeks to strengthen key competences such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, intercultural awareness and problem-solving through non-formal learning methods. Daily reflection, guided discussions and the use of the DiscoverEU Companion support participants in recognising their learning and personal development. We also aim to make European solidarity and inclusion tangible. By visiting cities connected by sustainable train travel and exploring how communities function across borders, participants experience diversity and belonging in practice rather than in theory. Beyond individual development, the project aims to increase awareness of European opportunities within the local community. By sharing their experiences, participants can inspire other young people with fewer opportunities to consider mobility as a realistic and achievable path. Overall, the project aims to transform mobility from something that feels distant and intimidating into something that feels possible, meaningful and empowering.
