Objectives

The project aims to create a safe and meaningful learning space where young people aged 13–15 experience belonging, responsibility and mastery through shared outdoor activities in nature. Many young people in this age group are in a sensitive transition phase. They need arenas where they can participate without pressure, build confidence in themselves and others, and experience that their contribution matters. The project seeks to strengthen participants’ ability to cooperate, take responsibility and engage actively in a group. Through structured, experience-based activities in natural surroundings, young people develop trust, communication skills and resilience in real situations. They handle challenges together, support one another and reflect on what they learn as a group. A central objective is to foster inclusion and equal participation. The project brings together young people who may face social barriers, economic barriers and geographical barriers. By working through practical and shared experiences rather than verbal performance, the project lowers barriers to participation and creates space for everyone to contribute on equal terms. The project also aims to strengthen young people’s relationship both to each other and to wild nature. Through shared activities outdoors, participants build real friendships across national and cultural differences. At the same time, they are invited to slow down, pay attention and be fully present in natural surroundings. By walking, working, resting and facing challenges together nature, they develop a felt sense of closeness and connection to the landscape itself. Nature is not treated as a place of recreation, but as something they spend time in and relate to. Through repeated and meaningful experiences in wild nature, participants can begin to develop a sense of friendship with nature itself. This is not presented as an abstract idea, but grows out of lived experience, sensory awareness and shared moments of attention. When young people experience both friendship with each other and friendship with nature, care follows naturally. They become more willing to stay in contact with friends across borders, and more willing to protect and take responsibility for wild nature as such, whether in Norway, Türkiye, Latvia or elsewhere. From a youth work perspective, the project strengthens non-formal learning through active involvement, shared responsibility and structured reflection rooted in lived experience. Nature functions as a concrete learning arena where young people take initiative, make decisions and experience the consequences of their choices in a supportive group setting. The objective is to strengthen their confidence, sense of belonging and capacity to participate actively in their local communities after the exchange.
