The main goal of this project is to qualify 24 participants in the age of 15 – 17 years, who are already volunteering in youth work – activities, especially outdoor in nature, to learn how to combine youth-work-activities, especially outdoor, with democracy-education. The participants will experience, understand and learn to facilitate group processes and decision-making—by becoming familiar with methods that enable groups to make good, equitable decisions that consider everyone involved. Why to combine democratical education with outdoor- activities? Young people who are out together in nature, hiking together, carrying luggage, food and tents, setting up and taking down camps, cooking on fire, rationing the food they have brought with them so that there is still enough to eat also on the last day. The participants have to work together to a high degree, support each other, take responsibility together, make joint decisions that REALLY MATTER and have consequences. Participants have to look out for each other, support each other, and come to terms with the fact that not everyone is equally fast, strong and skilled, and that they also have different needs. And with all this: How do we ensure that some, who are more articulate, faster, or more confident, do not dominate decision-making and idea development? How do we integrate everyone and enable participation despite different needs and opinions? How do we take into account that people have different levels of strength, energy, motivation, confidence, and different abilities? A lived democracy is also a community of solidarity in which individuals support one another empathetically. This project includes three youth exchanges between summer 26 and summer 27. During this time the participants will develop in their country-teams each one camp for at least three days for other young people. This three camps will be organized and realized by each country team just before the last youth exchange as a kind of “final exam”. During this project the participants do not just learn how to develop a project, to be a real team, etc., they reflect own experiences with democracy and learn to work with interactive methods that focus on the topic of democracy that do work well peer-to-peer especially in outdoor-settings. Some of this methods they will also include into their own selforganozed camps. On the last youth exchange the participants will have an intense exchange about how their own camp went and what they learned during the planing and implementation oft he camp. Together the participants will then develop ideas for future activities. During the whole process the participants acquire a wide range of entrepreneurial skills, learn to work together as a group, develop ideas and implement them jointly within a project framework. They acquire methods of non-formal education and expand their competence to cooperate with others, and since this also happens in an international context, the project promotes the intercultural competences of the participants as well. At the outset, it is also about how we experience democracy at home, in our own environment in Belgium, Germany and Norway, in our families, at school, in our organisation, in our country, reflecting the the complexity and value of democratic systems and societies, understanding the active and diverse role that one can play in them.
