Objectives

Locked In is a 9-day Professional Development Activity that addresses the growing crisis of sedentary lifestyles and digital "observer culture" among young people by leveraging the principles of Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) and Kurt Hahn’s pedagogical approach. As traditional youth work becomes increasingly digitized and often trivial, this project reclaims the importance of physical activity and space through mainly rock-climbing and living in basic outdoor settings, in a self-managed camp. By engaging participants in the end-to-end planning and execution of self-propelled climbing week, we foster essential transversal abilities among participants such as resilience, autonomy, complex problem solving, group and self-confidence, trust and interdependency. Through this sustainable and engaging form of learning, the project claims to challenge its participating youth workers and through them - youth to step beyond their comfort zones, replacing digital anxiety with a tangible sense of agency, physical well-being, and a renewed connection to both the natural world and their peers. Locked In aims to improve the quality and impact of youth work provided by partner organizations by equipping their youth workers with the essential competences needed to conduct Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE). Specifically, the project will use rock-climbing as a meaningful educational tool. Project sets next objectives: - To enhance a learner-centered and compelling learning environment for young people within partner organizations by reflecting (as youth workers) on their current challenges and aspirations, behavior patterns and learning needs. - To promote active, outdoor, and movement-based approaches—such as Outdoor Adventure Education—as effective methodologies for positively engaging young people. - To explore and apply rock climbing as a tool that supports the holistic development of young people across physical, emotional, and social dimensions. - To enhance participants' soft skills, such as communication, resilience, teamwork, trust, problem-solving, confidence and leadership, through hands-on climbing and adventure-based learning activities. - To improve participants' hard skills, including climbing technique, risk prevention & safety protocols, belaying, crisis response, route planning, etc. essential for facilitating adventure based educational programs. - To facilitate the exchange of good practices and strengthen networking among adventure education practitioners for sustainable long-term cooperation
