The project “Green It Up! Eco Skills for Youth” was created in response to the real needs of young people who are increasingly noticing and experiencing the effects of climate change, growing environmental problems, and an overload of worrying information about the future of the planet. Participants declare awareness of ecological challenges, yet at the same time point to a lack of a sense of agency, clear guidance, and practical tools for action. As a result, many young people experience so-called eco-stress and ecological anxiety which, instead of mobilising them, leads to feelings of helplessness, paralysis, and withdrawal from taking action. The initiative to implement the project came from young people in Poland, who approached the Foundation Institute of Work and Career with a proposal to carry out an international ecological project. As activities for environmental protection are one of the pillars of the organisation’s work, the initiative received full support. At the next stage, cooperation was established with partners from Ukraine, Turkey, and Croatia, who work with young people interested in ecology and civic engagement. Joint online consultations made it possible to tailor the project programme to the real needs of participants and to focus it on moving from fear and informational chaos to concrete, feasible ecological actions. The project also responds to the gap between awareness and action, as well as to the insufficient preparation of formal education systems to develop competences needed for a sustainable way of life. Many participants indicate that their previous education did not provide them with sufficient tools or skills to make informed ecological decisions in everyday life. Some young people do not even have basic knowledge of ecology and sustainable development, which further justifies the need to implement a project with a real, practical impact. The main objective of the project is to strengthen the ecological competences of young people in a practical and accessible way. The project aims to help participants to: · better understand global and local environmental challenges, including issues such as climate change, responsible consumption, zero waste, recycling, carbon footprint, greenwashing, fast fashion, and the protection of water resources; · learn how to cope with eco-stress; · develop realistic, everyday ecological habits that can be implemented in their environments; · strengthen their sense of agency, self-confidence, and motivation to act through joint initiatives; · develop skills in international cooperation, communication, work organisation, time management, as well as creative and innovative thinking; · increase motivation for further development and social engagement. An important objective of the project is also to give young people a voice and create a space in which participants not only learn about ecology, but also co-create solutions and pass knowledge on to others. The creation of an ecological outdoor game and the implementation of information activities on social media will enable them to become active peer educators rather than mere recipients of content. At the same time, the project supports the development of interpersonal, language, artistic, digital, and social competences, and strengthens civic and European attitudes. Participants will learn about cultures, traditions, and everyday realities in other countries, which will contribute to building mutual understanding, lasting relationships, and international friendships.
