Objectives

The “Chain of Change” project was initiated by young people themselves, who expressed a clear need to engage with the topic of blockchain. During our meetings, participants admitted that this technology is mostly associated with speculation and cryptocurrencies. They wanted to explore whether it serves only as a financial tool or if it can also be a driver for democracy, environmental protection, and social justice. A survey carried out among 700 young people from Poland, Spain, and Italy confirmed these observations. Most respondents rely on social media and clickbait headlines for information about blockchain, 67% see it only as a tool for investments, and 72% of youth from rural areas reported never having access to education about new technologies. At the same time, European reports show a decline in young people’s trust in democratic institutions, while only a small percentage know how blockchain can support transparency and participation. For us, this was a clear signal to act. Our main goal is to equip young adults with blockchain-related knowledge and competences, understood as a tool for upholding European values such as democracy, transparency, sustainability, and social justice. In practice, we want to democratize knowledge by showing that blockchain is not just a financial technology but also a way to strengthen digital democracy and youth participation. The project will introduce participants to examples developed by the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), simulate blockchain-based voting systems, and analyze transparency in public finance. It will also address the European Green Deal by exploring energy-efficient solutions such as Proof-of-Stake and by designing ecological applications of blockchain. Special attention will be given to inclusion - 30% of participants will come from rural areas and groups with fewer opportunities. Thanks to non-formal education methods such as peer mentoring and universal design for learning, we will ensure equal access to knowledge and active participation for all. The project responds to the needs of young people while aligning with the EU Youth Strategy 2019–2027 and the objectives of the European Green Deal. It supports the Erasmus+ horizontal priorities: inclusion and diversity, environmental sustainability, digital transformation, and youth participation. Our practice in youth work shows that non-formal education is the most effective way to gain such competences. That is why we emphasize learning by doing – hackathons, Oxford-style debates, case studies, simulations of democratic processes, and intercultural mentoring. These methods motivate young people, foster critical thinking, and provide space for hands-on collaboration. “Chain of Change” is a project designed to shift mindsets. We want to challenge stereotypes that blockchain is only for investors or that technology inevitably harms the environment. Instead, we will show that it can serve local communities, support climate action, and reinforce democracy. Participants will return home with new knowledge, international teamwork experience, and concrete ideas for their own initiatives. We will also create a lasting platform – the European Blockchain Youth Network – where they can continue to exchange experiences and co-create future projects. Our youth work practice makes one thing clear: when young people feel their voices matter and their ideas are genuinely implemented, they engage wholeheartedly. This project responds directly to their needs and offers an opportunity to turn blockchain into a tool for strengthening European values and building an inclusive digital future.
