Objectives

This application was created on the initiative of young people – participants of the Hufiec Pracy (Voluntary Labour Corps) in Wadowice. The young people we work with experience difficulties in learning and problems with expressing their thoughts; therefore, the project is being developed with the support of OHP staff. OHP participants are becoming increasingly aware of climate-related issues and express a willingness to introduce changes in their surroundings; however, they lack the necessary tools and confidence in their own abilities and do not know how to start. The young people we work with come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have often had to face problems inappropriate for their age, which does not have a positive impact on their sense of agency. This is a group of young people for whom engaging in various activities is more difficult than for their peers - although they feel the need for change, they often keep in the background because they lack the confidence to consider their contribution as valuable. We see their willingness to act, as well as, unfortunately, the doubts that accompany it—whether what they can do at present will be enough and whether they will be able to implement their plans. We agreed with the young people that if they want to prepare an exchange project despite their doubts, we will help them carry it out, we will help them substantively, technical and financial. The young people were eager, which is why this project application was created. The Eko-Quests project does not assume major innovations, but rather a series of small pro-ecological activities, through the implementation of which young people will become convinced of the importance of introducing small changes, as well as acquire tools and gain self-confidence, which will be crucial in their further development, including their ecological journey. The project is based on non-formal learning methods, learning by doing, workshop activities in direct contact with nature, and learning from one another’s experiences. Participants want to carry out activities such as building bird and insect houses, planting trees, cleaning the local area, or refurbishing old textiles. By enabling young people to implement this project, we want them to be assured that already today, with the tools available to them, they can have a real impact on the environment and that they do not have to wait until they are able to do more. The aim of the project is not only to increase young people’s environmental awareness, but also to challenge the belief that small changes do not matter. The implementation of the project will help young people develop a sense of agency and confidence in their own abilities. Participants will realise that the Earth is a common good and that taking part in caring for it is possible for everyone. Another objective of the project is the acquisition and development of participants’ social competences: the ability to work in an international team, building openness, empathy, and intercultural communication, as well as a sense of belonging within the group. Young people have few opportunities to communicate in English, but they want to overcome the existing language and cultural barrier and try to establish contact with people from outside their country. The aforementioned language barrier is a significant obstacle for participants; therefore, they decided that during the mobility they want to focus on activities based on active engagement or manual tasks, as they believe that this will make it easier for them to start speaking in english when communications is an "addition" to the activites being undertaken. The project also aims to promote a sustainable lifestyle, responsible consumption, and pro-environmental attitudes which participants will be able to apply in their local communities after the exchange. Participation in the project and satisfaction with the results achieved during it will become an inspiration for young people to continue acting for environmental protection and to maintain a proactive attitude.
