Objectives

The “Healthy relations through communication” project responds to challenges we observe in our youth work: increasing loneliness, communication shifting into online spaces, and a growing difficulty in building meaningful face-to-face relationships. These trends are often linked to lower agency, reduced offline self-expression, stress, and conflict in peer and family environments and they are also confirmed by research. A Europe-wide youth loneliness comparison (2024) shows that around 57% of Europeans aged 18-35 report at least moderate loneliness. In addition, the UNAWEZA Foundation’s “Młode Głowy” report (2023, Poland; youth aged 10-19) highlights widespread low agency (81.9% declare they cannot find solutions in difficult situations) and links it with poorer mental well-being, low self-acceptance, loneliness, and lack of motivation factors that directly undermine communication and relationships. In our local context, through regular contact with young people aged 13-26 in Pracownia Młodych Centrum C9 (Kraków) and interviews we conducted, we repeatedly see needs such as difficulties initiating conversations and small talk, low confidence to speak up in unfair situations (school/work), and limited skills to manage conflict, stress, and emotions often accompanied by a feeling of not being heard. Our goal is to develop a project that equips young people with practical techniques and methods to better understand themselves, strengthen their physical and mental well-being, and build the confidence to open up and communicate empathetically with others. Through this, participants will be supported in creating new, healthy relationships and encouraged to initiate positive changes that continue beyond the project’s duration. Main objectives of the project are to: 1) Raise awareness and equip participants with tools to improve self-awareness, physical and emotional well-being, and communication skills through non-formal learning methods. 2) Support young participants in better understanding their emotions, needs, values, and personal identity, strengthening their self-esteem and sense of self. 3) Improve communication and conflict resolution skills - enhance young people’s ability to engage in open, empathetic, and assertive communication, both in peer and adult relationships, listen actively and understand different perspectives (NVC). 4) Strengthen emotional intelligence - develop participants’ skills in recognising, expressing, and regulating emotions. 5) Promote healthy relationships - provide young people with knowledge and tools to build, maintain, and set boundaries in healthy relationships. But also allowing them to bond and try in practice during the mobility. 6) Encourage active participation and inclusion - create a space where young people feel confident to express themselves and engage actively in group processes, conducting workshops during open space, while promoting tolerance, diversity, equality, and mutual respect among participants from different backgrounds. 7) Encourage active lifestyle and contact with nature, using eco practices - increase daily physical activities and connection with nature by incorporating movement-based activities, outdoor exercises, implementing eco habits. 8) Promote intercultural learning and multicultural awareness - create a diverse and inclusive environment where young people can develop their English language skills, learn about different cultures, perspectives, and values. 9) Develop participants’ key competences (literacy, multilingual, personal and social, and cultural awareness and expression) through reflection, English communication, teamwork and intercultural exchange. During our youth exchange, we will also prepare young people to design and implement their own initiatives for the local community in Poland. By working in groups, participants will put the knowledge and skills they have acquired into practice, which will help them prepare to create and carry out similar initiatives for their own local communities after returning to their home countries. This will raise their sense of agency. Our project aligns with the Erasmus+ programme and the Youth Exchange action by combining non-formal learning, intercultural mobility, and youth-led participation. It promotes inclusion and diversity, European values, digital well-being, environmental sustainability, and intercultural dialogue. It also supports key European Youth Goals: Goal 5 (Mental Health and Well-being) by providing tools for self-care, emotional regulation, stress management, and healthy relationships; Goal 4 (Information & Constructive Dialogue) by creating safe spaces for reflection and meaningful dialogue while strengthening communication, empathy, and critical thinking; and Goal 3 (Inclusive Societies) by ensuring active participation of young people with fewer opportunities (8 of 24 participants) through inclusive facilitation and a supportive environment.
