The Social Makers project aims primarily to empower young people to become agents of change in their communities, using social entrepreneurship to address social and environmental challenges. Through a non-formal education approach, the project fosters the development of practical skills, social inclusion, and intercultural collaboration, preparing participants to take on active and transformative roles in society. The first objective is to equip participants with entrepreneurial and project management skills. In the Impact Lab, young people will work in groups to identify social and environmental problems in Coimbra and propose concrete, viable solutions. This process encourages critical thinking, creativity, financial literacy, problem-solving, and sustainability, strengthening participants’ professional profiles and enabling them to turn ideas into projects with real impact. The project also promotes social inclusion by ensuring opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and allowing them to collaborate in multicultural teams. Interaction with participants from diverse backgrounds enriches learning, fosters mutual understanding and respect for diversity, and reinforces European citizenship competencies and democratic participation. Another objective is to strengthen the connection between young people and local communities. During community missions in Coimbra, participants engage directly with local challenges and propose solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This direct engagement enhances social awareness and encourages young people to act as change-makers, applying participatory methodologies and recognized youth work practices. International collaboration is an essential component of Social Makers. With partners such as Sicily Plus, ESN Iasi, Green Glow Youth Association, Girişimci Gençlik Grubu, and Vision Gen, the project benefits from the experience of European organizations specialized in social entrepreneurship, inclusion, and sustainability. This exchange of experiences strengthens intercultural skills, exposes young people to different contexts, and inspires them to adapt global solutions to local realities. Partner universities, including Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the Vilnius Social Entrepreneurship Centre, contribute to academic integration and the development of practical and applied research skills. The Impact Lab serves as a creative and collaborative space to consolidate learning from the exchange. Using methodologies such as brainstorming, design thinking, and SWOT analysis, participants develop innovative projects to address local challenges. These projects are supported after the exchange, ensuring practical implementation and real impact, with ongoing guidance from mentors and partners. Partnerships with local institutions, such as University of Coimbra through UC Social, NAPEEC, and the Academic Association of Coimbra (AAC), further enhance the project’s impact. These institutions support participants’ integration into the youth ecosystem, promoting collaborative networks, mentorship, and continuity of initiatives after the exchange. The project also aims to cultivate a future-oriented mindset among participants, focused on innovation, collaboration, resilience, and active citizenship. Young people learn to solve complex problems, applying transferable skills to different contexts and challenges, with emphasis on sustainability, inclusion, and responsible leadership. In the long term, Social Makers seeks to generate impact beyond the direct participants. The solutions developed in the Impact Lab will be implemented in the participants’ communities of origin, supported by mentors and the established international network. The project’s online channel will allow the sharing of progress, ideas, and best practices, maintaining contact between young people and strengthening the multiplier effect, inspiring new initiatives in local and international contexts. Social Makers transforms young people into entrepreneurial leaders prepared to face contemporary challenges, combining practical learning, intercultural collaboration, community engagement, and fundamental European values. The project empowers participants, strengthens communities, and ensures that the impact of the solutions, methodologies, and best practices endures far beyond the initial implementation.
