Discrimination manifests itself in multiple aspects of everyday life, affecting areas such as employment, education and access to social services, as well as through hostile attitudes towards migrants and refugees, stigmatisation, and racist or xenophobic political discourse. This negative social climate contributes to the emergence of intolerance and exclusion, making it urgent to create initiatives that promote inclusion, equality and respect for human rights, especially among young people. In this context, participation in urban sports emerges as a powerful tool to counter these trends, as it promotes values and competences essential for personal and social development. Urban sports culture values respect, solidarity, teamwork, freedom of expression and tolerance, fostering a sense of belonging and social cohesion within communities, whether place-based or interest-based. The practice of these sports also contributes to the consolidation of a positive cultural identity, strengthening social integration and promoting the fundamental values of the European Union, such as human dignity, human rights, freedom and equality. By combining physical, expressive and creative activities, urban sports offer a motivating, enjoyable and safe experience that encourages voluntary participation and sustained youth engagement. Youth in Europe decided to take responsibility for designing the project Take Back the Streets with the aim of exploring the benefits of urban sports and using them as a means to foster positive values among young people, combat discrimination and open up opportunities for social inclusion. The project seeks to create a safe and structured space where young people can reflect on issues of inequality and exclusion, learn to respect and value diversity, and experience, through sport, concrete strategies for inclusion. Throughout the project, participants will be encouraged to actively collaborate in the design and implementation of activities, strengthening practical and social competences such as organisation, communication, leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, conflict resolution and empathy. This active participation enables young people to better understand the challenges of social exclusion and to acquire tools to promote positive change in their communities, while simultaneously increasing their self-esteem, confidence and sense of civic responsibility. Take Back the Streets also aims to promote gender equality and challenge stereotypes related to masculinity and femininity through sport, offering an inclusive environment where all participants can express themselves freely and experience a sense of fairness and justice. By involving young people from diverse cultural, social and economic backgrounds, the project promotes intercultural dialogue and unity among people, strengthens community bonds, encourages mutual understanding and reduces prejudice and social barriers. At the same time, the practice of urban sports makes a significant contribution to young people’s physical and mental health, helping them cope with stress, anxiety and personal challenges, while promoting well-being, resilience and healthy lifestyles that extend beyond the duration of the exchange. Participation in the project also allows young people to develop practical and transversal competences directly related to youth work practice, including research, information management, intercultural communication, teamwork in multicultural settings, project writing, use of digital tools, workshop facilitation, event organisation and mediation of inclusive activities. Working in an international and multicultural context enhances participants’ employability, prepares them for future professional and social challenges and stimulates their sense of initiative. At the same time, involvement in the project encourages active civic participation and social awareness, fostering positive change in local communities and transforming young people into agents of social change and multipliers of good practices. By combining experiential learning, the development of social competences, the promotion of European values and strong community involvement, Take Back the Streets ensures a lasting impact, benefiting not only the participants but also the partner organisations and local communities. The project ensures that results are tangible and sustainable, strengthening social inclusion, community cohesion and the appreciation of cultural diversity, while reinforcing young people’s capacity to lead and replicate urban sports and social integration initiatives in diverse contexts, thus multiplying the project’s impact far beyond its physical duration.
