Objectives

Too many learning environments leave young people behind, especially those facing socio-economic, linguistic, or cultural barriers. Verbal methods can fail to include those who think or learn differently. That's why Visual Bridges exists: to develop the power of visual communication, a universal language that breaks down these barriers. This project ensures that all young people, no matter their background, can express themselves, engage fully, and feel seen in inclusive and accessible learning environments. Visual Bridges was developed in response to the concrete needs identified by youth workers across Romania, Italy, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Poland, and Lithuania. Through surveys, interviews, focus groups, and local consultations, the partnership highlighted three key challenges in youth work: the lack of accessible and inclusive educational tools for young people facing socio-economic, cultural, and linguistic barriers; the need for innovative ways to engage non-native speakers and migrant youth; and the importance of non-verbal communication methods to support expression and participation of marginalized groups. The project addresses these gaps by introducing visual facilitation and visual literacy as innovative approaches in non-formal education. Through sketching, mind mapping, graphic recording, and visual storytelling, youth workers will be trained to design participatory learning environments that are more engaging, inclusive, and adaptable to diverse learning styles. The project is co-designed by the partner NGOs and youth workers themselves, ensuring that methods are directly applicable to their daily practice and rooted in real needs. From a youth work perspective, Visual Bridges is both a training and a capacity-building pathway: it enhances youth workers’ competences, fosters the inclusion of marginalized young people, and strengthens organizational capacity across the consortium. A digital Toolbox of 30 co-created methods will ensure long-term usability and replication, while the network of youth workers developed during the project will continue to exchange practices and create future initiatives. The objectives of the project are: 1. Strengthen youth workers’ competence in designing and facilitating inclusive and accessible non-formal learning processes through visual facilitation, adapting methods to young people who struggle with language-based approaches. 2. Improve youth workers’ intercultural and communication competences by using visual and non-verbal methods to bridge linguistic, cultural, and religious barriers and engage migrant, refugee, and marginalized youth. 3. Empower youth workers to foster self-expression and participation of marginalized youth through visual storytelling, graphic facilitation, and other non-verbal tools that build confidence and a stronger sense of belonging to EU. 4. Develop an international community of youth workers able to create and maintain safe, supportive, and participatory learning environments, making educational spaces more dynamic, engaging, and inclusive for diverse learning styles and vulnerable groups. 5. Co-design and deliver a digital Visual Bridges Toolbox collecting 30 practical methods to ensure long-term usability and replication, while reinforcing a European community of practice for peer learning, networking, and dissemination through partner organisations and external NGOs.
