With “RailReady: IRL Autonomy” we want to do something simple, and rare for young people with fewer opportunities in rural areas: to place them, safely, in real life situations where they can practice autonomy, with support and without shame. In Cogealac and the nearby rural communities, many young people grow up with very limited financial resources, reduced mobility, little access to international opportunities and unstable adult support. For young people who have been in the child protection system, the pressure of transitioning to independent living is even higher. In January 2026, the Constanța DGASPC records 42 young people aged 18 to 21 who have exited residential care, 26 continue full time studies, 12 are employed, and 4 are NEET or in reduced frequency, evening, or distance education. Behind these figures sits the same barrier we see every day in the Luna și Noi Youth Center in Cogealac: potential is there, but safe contexts are missing, where youth can learn in practice how to cope, how to plan, how to manage money, how to ask for help, and how to stay calm when plans fail. That is why the project aims to reduce inequality in access to European mobility and to turn the DiscoverEU experience into a tool for inclusion, learning and self confidence. As a youth work practice, we work through direct experience, an active role, peer learning, mentoring and guided reflection, not through theory. Between 01/09/2026 and 30/04/2027 we deliver 4 DiscoverEU Inclusion mobilities, each 7 days long, with 4 different groups of five young people (18-21) with fewer opportunities, each accompanied by one youth worker. The small groups are intentional, they prevent overwhelm, increase safety and allow individualised support. We do not fix destinations from the start, because the project is built around participation, young people choose routes and learning goals, while we guide them with clear tools and safety boundaries. The objectives are clear and measurable: by 30/04/2027, 20 young people complete one mobility each; by 31/05/2027, at least 75% increase their autonomy score by at least +2 points out of 10 on at least two dimensions (orientation and planning, budgeting, communication, decision making); 100% complete Youthpass and a 90 day Personal Autonomy Plan, and at least 60% implement at least two concrete steps at home (education, work, volunteering, practical daily life). To reach this, each group goes through three preparatory meetings before departure (travel skills, budget and wellbeing, digital tools), receives support for planning (routes, accommodation, insurance, safety rules) and uses a simple digital “Rail Diary” that makes reflection easy and repeatable. After each trip we hold a debrief, complete Youthpass and organise a local “Autonomy Pop up” event where participants, in pairs, share practical tools (safety checklist, useful apps, budgeting, a plan B), becoming role models for other youth. The project is implemented by Luna și Noi, based in Grădina with a working point in Cogealac, in close cooperation with the Cogealac Technical High School, the Social Assistance service within Cogealac City Hall and DGASPC Constanța, so that European mobility is accessible, safe and truly relevant for real life. During the mobilities we use the same learning pathway for every group: “Start Smart” for orientation and planning (offline maps, connections, group rules), “Money Moves” for financial autonomy (daily budgets and spending logs), “Social Compass” for social autonomy (communication, asking for help, boundaries) and “Future Map” to connect the experience to real steps back home (education, work, volunteering). Young people take rotating daily roles, navigator, timekeeper, budget keeper, communicator, wellbeing buddy, and the accompanying person applies “supported autonomy”, stepping in when needed, while decisions stay with the group. This is inclusion in practice: we remove financial and logistical barriers through intensive planning support and a complete EU and project branded travel kit that provides the minimum equipment for a 7 day journey (cabin suitcase, backpack, organisers, reusable bottle, powerbank, rain poncho, hygiene and safety kit). We use simple digital tools, Rail Planner, offline maps, translation and checklists, to build functional digital skills. Because the mobilities are train based, the project also supports the green dimension of Erasmus+. For many participants this will be their first international experience. Travelling by rail naturally brings the green and sustainable side of Europe, but we also make it a learning moment: participants compare low waste options, use public transport, and learn how cities organise services that young people rely on. Meeting peers and youth friendly places across Europe strengthens cultural understanding, reduces stereotypes and builds a concrete sense of solidarity and belonging.
