Objectives

Young people today are growing up in a context marked by environmental degradation, social fragmentation, and uncertainty about the future. Many have limited opportunities to experience alternative models of living that prioritise cooperation, sustainability, and shared responsibility. At the same time, conflicts, both internal and interpersonal, often hinder collective action and community building. In the context of an ongoing social and ecological crisis, the project responds to the need for young people to develop tools that enable them to live more consciously, cooperate across differences, and actively participate in shaping sustainable futures in Europe The current project is designed and coordinated by former participants and facilitators of the initial Youth Exchange, who experienced firsthand the impact of this learning process. Their transition from participants to youth workers demonstrates the long-term effect of the exchange and the capacity of the project to generate continuity, responsibility, and leadership. Through this second edition, the intention is to offer the same opportunity to a new group of participants, enabling them to be influenced by this experience and to further transfer the learning outcomes into their local communities and into other groups they will work or live with in the future. By showing young people possibilities of living as a community and sharing experiences with participants who already live this way, the project may bring them closer to this reality. In this way, the project functions as a living cycle of learning, practice, and dissemination. The Youth Exchange aims to bring together young people from different European countries to explore common challenges and opportunities related to sustainability, community living, and social cohesion. The intention is to empower young people how to design their lives in a way that feels meaningful and balanced in relation to themselves (personal growth), allows them to address and transform conflict (conflict resolution), and supports living together in a sustainable way (community living). To bring together three core values that youth workers need to have awakened and developed at early stages of their lives means that the project supports young people in developing self-awareness, initiative, and the ability to critically reflect on different ways of living. It helps them explore inclusive and non-violent approaches to conflict that arise in both urban and rural communities, recognising conflict as a key challenge to long-term community sustainability. At the same time, it allows them to experience and reflect on living and working together within a hosting community (Earthbound Ecovillage in Sweden), inspiring participants through direct lived experience.
