Objectives

Popular culture (music and music videos) plays a significant role in shaping young people’s values, identity and perceptions of the world. Young people are exposed to such content on a daily basis; however, opportunities for conscious and critical reflection on these messages remain limited. A particular concern is that many popular songs convey messages that reinforce stereotypes, discrimination or other problematic social patterns, which often remain unnoticed due to language barriers, artistic formats or visual representation. The LYRICS project builds on the experience of the LokalPatriot organisation, which, through the organisation of concerts and cultural events, maintains continuous contact with young people and their musical practices. The project addresses the identified challenge through a youth exchange that uses popular music and music videos as a starting point for non-formal learning, critical reflection and creative expression. The aim of the project is to provide young people with a safe and participatory environment in which they can develop critical thinking, media and cultural literacy, as well as communication skills. Through the analysis of song lyrics and visual messages, discussions and creative activities, participants will be encouraged to develop a more conscious and critical relationship with popular culture and, indirectly, with other content that surrounds them. At the same time, the project supports the development of self-expression, creativity, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility, and seeks to contribute in the long term to increased involvement of young people in cultural and social life.
