Objectives

With our youth exchange, we aim to offer young people with intellectual disabilities a unique opportunity to “disconnect from screens”, connect with other young people and with themselves, and try out new tools and activities that can support them in strengthening their mental resilience and coping with various psychosocial challenges. The objectives of our youth exchange for a group of 18 young people from three different countries, all with mild intellectual disabilities, are to: - provide an opportunity for a “digital detox” by creating a safe space in which participants can develop authentic social connections and begin to talk openly about the difficulties they experience; - offer opportunities and support to explore tools that can help them cope with challenges and strengthen their mental resilience; - support and encourage the creation of outdoor activities through which participants can connect with one another, develop social skills, and enjoy themselves without screens; - create space for reflection on screen use and on the impact of social media and video games on their well-being; - enable intercultural learning through personal encounters with young people from other countries, intercultural evenings as part of the exchange, and the exploration of shared core values in today’s uncertain world; - provide opportunities to strengthen self-confidence, creativity, and initiative through active involvement in the design and implementation of the exchange programme, as opposed to passive participation in a school-based programme. Through this international experience, which will be the first of its kind for most participants, young people with intellectual disabilities will have the opportunity to discover cultural diversity on the one hand and shared fundamental European values on the other. The project will involve a target group of young people who are often discriminated against and perceived as less capable, and together with the participants we aim to challenge and overcome this pattern. Through active participation in the project, young people will show themselves and others that they are capable of taking initiative, creating content, and taking responsibility. The aim of the exchange is for participants to leave the experience feeling empowered, with increased self-confidence and a sense of being respected by others. They will embark on a journey of exploration with the purpose of strengthening their skills through non-formal learning, reflecting on their lifestyle and challenges, and, together with their peers, discovering tools that they can use independently to improve their well-being.
