The objective of this project is to contributing to the employability of doctorates in emerging areas by (a) developing clear and easy ways from the Master to the PhD program for researcher and at the end to the labour market, (b) fostering the knowledge triangle and (c) exploring alternative ways of insertion into the labour market (d) providing joint research programs between Higher education and industry and in this way to contributing to train those specialized PhD for the jobs of the present and the future in a sustainable way. As a first step it is important to foster the connexion between education and labour market. The industry is expected to define the competences they request from PhD graduates. In this sense a survey on European level will be launched to learn about requirements from the labour market in emerging areas as well as ideas from the industry how cooperation could look like. Secondly, a working group will analyses the survey results and discuss specific measures that might be implemented at both HEI and Industry to improve the employability of PhD graduates considerably. These measures are meant to be the last step before PhD graduates´ insertion into the labour market after a tailor made and specialized training based on the demands of the industry. To that purpose, Comprehensive Outplacement Program (COP) It will be developed. For that end, is it proposed a COP that would consist in two lines. Firstly a training (mainly online) and secondly personal guidance and support: coaching, mentoring and the approaching to the labor market through visits to companies and mobility programs. To sustain this approach it will be crucial to create a consortium of enterprises all over Europe that engage to provide internships at all stages of the PhD program, cooperate with HEI in the execution of trainings, workshops and the other measures.
The objective of OUTDOC is to cover for this training gap by providing these doctorate students with the soft skills that they lack to access the market. A comprehensive, tailored training program, outside formal education, will permit the students to access the market and thus cover the needs of the European XXI markets.
OUTDOC was born with the purpose of providing an opportunity to those PhD students that cannot access the academia and face the uncertainties of joining the labour market after a career devoted to research. It is a highly skilled labour force, that matches the needs of a highly demanding market, but that lacks the right soft skills for employability. These skills are not provided at education institutions, creating a gap that burdens the European industry competitiveness.
