Project summary

There are hundreds of young people in Nicaragua who have made the leap from self-employment to generating employment opportunities for others. They represent around 2.2% of the total youth population, according to the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development (Funides). Nevertheless, a 2013 study carried out in over 100 countries by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor places Nicaragua and Venezuela last on the list of Latin American countries that foster business ventures.Spain, Italy and Turkey are an excellent example of a struggle with youth unemployment and the lack of education in this field. Needs of young people to find a job is well addressed, but job market does not answer these needs properly. One solution that is often offered is that young people start their work practice in chosen company, right after the university for a minimal salary and after the practice, they often get replaced by new students. This is a “legal” practice by the majority of companies in order to find cheap labor and not to pay fines for firing employees. On other side U.K is more advanced with understanding of Entrepreneurship education and support system for entrepreneurs that can be transfer to all other partners. The overall aim of the project is in accordance with the primary objectives capacity building project for Youth:- To create a sustainable partnership between NGOs and institutions from Program countries and Nicaragua in order to transfer the training model on the entrepreneurship education/social entrepreneurship among young people.- To establish two-business incubators (one Nicaragua and one in Turkey) that focuses on social business and mentoring young people to start their business. The specific objectives are:1) To develop creative thinking, employability (soft) skills, financial management, strategic planning and entrepreneurial skills of young people2) To create a training module on how to develop, validate and implement social entrepreneurial projects and enterprises through non formal education methodologies.3) To create cross-sector cooperation between NGOs and Universities.4) To create sustainable partnership between institutions/NGOs from program countries and Nicaragua.5) To work with and train mentors on how they can support young people in developing entrepreneurial paths.6) To explore practical ways of supporting young people in NGO set up and social enterprises, taking into consideration legal, financial, management and social requirements.7) To create new tools and methods designed to develop entrepreneurial skills among young people through trainings.8) To provide young people with a platform where they can exchange experience and expertise in the field of SE through internship.9) To develop solidarity, promote tolerance and foster mutual understanding between generations and cultures by creating a common platform for development.10) To promote Erasmus+ programme outside of Europe.

Final report summary

Nicaragua still live with the after-effects of the Sandinista Revolution of the 1980s. Social themes never previously discussed such as literacy campaigns, has now taken centre stage to empower Nicaraguans to create a more thriving and progressive society. Important progressions in the world of literature, business and the arts occurred, spawning a new set of young and diverse voices in protest to create hope in a myriad of genres. These conversations while new, continue to develop today and in increasingly wider forms and through diverse avenues. There are many young people in Nicaragua who have transformed from self-employment to generating employment opportunities for others. They represent around 2.2% of the total youth population, according to the Nicaraguan Foundation for Economic and Social Development (Funides). Nevertheless, a 2013 study carried out in over 100 countries by Global Entrepreneurship Monitor places Nicaragua and Venezuela last on the list of Latin American countries that foster business ventures. Arnulfo Urrutia, an expert business ventures, mentions that it is contradictory that foreigners who visit Nicaragua, perceive and envision innumerable opportunities in, while young Nicaraguans aspire to emigrate to explore. Currently the unemployment rate for young Nicaraguans is at 20%, and these receive no form of income; 15.5% are self-employed and 61.8% have a formal job, according to FUNIDES. DD have designed a project to support the newer generation of young adults in Latin America by providing a training course exchanging the foundations of business, creative and communication practices that can help the participants develop their ideas into projects, NGO’s or businesses that can create more of an ecological, social and environmental impact in their respective areas. According to Statista youth employment rate is 36.5% in Spain, 32.2% in Italy, 26.5 % in UK and 19.5% in Turkey. The situation regarding entrepreneurship education is very similar in these countries. All of them have a high young population that do not seem to receive the proper guidelines to employment or entrepreneurship These countries are an example struggling youth unemployment and a lack of education. The needs of young people are well addressed by government, however; the current markets have struggled to create opportunities to meet them. Many young people finishing university and work for a basic minimal salary only to be replaced shortly after. While this legal, it is viewed by many as exploitative and does not benefit the future of these prospects. This project provides the foundation for those wishing to become entrepreneurs and create their own opportunities.Spanish organisation Sende, widely recognised in the field of social entrepreneurship has been hugely supportive in meeting our goals. We want to carry out this project to encourage the following:- Civic involvement of young people- Investment of time and experience combatting key concerns of NGO’s/Youth Workers in Nicaragua.- To train them with special sustainable development skills to disseminate results and create/ establish related projects for other young people.- Development a new generation of Social Entrepreneurs to enable local economic growth. This partnership between Europe and South America strengthens the flow on knowledge and sharing of experience among all concerned organisations, ensuring the implementation and replication of the programme.
