Project summary

SAFETY is an initiative of 10 partners from 7 European countries (AT, DE, ES, IT, NO, PT, RO) that aims at renovating the educational offer in the field of Emergency Medicine. It will based on the adoption of simulation device, both physical (e.g. mannequin) and virtual patient. Universities and companies developing simulation tools will work together to design a new blended course composed of both theoretical and practical modules. Theoretical module will be delivered as e-learning, while practical module will consist of traditional class during which students will practice with simulation tools. The practical module will be recorded and appended to the e-learning output. Moreover, 2 additional training packages will be developed to address learners when dealing with exceptional situations consisting of situations in which lacks one of the fundamental component of the Emergency team, and when dealing with panicked patient’s relatives. The overall development of the training material will be addressed by relevant psychologist engaged in researches concerning the optimal Emergency team composition. At the end of the project, an Handbook to standardize the procedure to adopt the SAFETY outputs in order to guarantee the project sustainability and result exploitation beyond its lifetime.

Objectives

The main objectives of SAFETY are devoted to the development of a new educational course in the field of Emergency Medicine based on the learners’ needs and the use of simulation devices for training. In particular, thanks to the different backgrounds of the involved partners, SAFETY intends to deliver open access learning material of easy replication through provided guidelines in Emergency Medicine for improving technical and soft skills of learners and operators in a safe learning condition.

Background

The SAFETY project can be considered a technique (served by technology) to amplify the learning process with high fidelity guided experiences. It offers the possibility for learners to practice an activity in a safe environment without compromising patient safety, can be used to provide a wide range of curriculum requirements through clinical cases and role-playing games, Part-Task trainer (simulator of procedures) or full mission simulators where a learner works through a simulated scenario.

Collaborative efforts between HEIs and companies were integral to advancing and disseminating the new educational offerings. The primary focus encompassed conducting the HEIs training offer analysis, the detailed multi-stakeholder training need analysis and, then, the development of the theoretical materials and scenarios for the e-learning platform now available. << Results >> - Report on education & training convergences and divergences, literature review and company good practices in Emergency;- Body of Knowledge including results on training needs, desk research and gap analysis- Training material with theoretical modules and practical scenarios developed by the partners and peer-reviewed on the topic of Emergency medicine- e-learning Moodle platform with training modules on Emergency Medicine- Handbook for the adoption of the project outputs- project website
